On 27th Nov ‘14 I enjoyed watching Ek Mulaqaat, a fascinating drama in Urdu about the
unconventional romance between the famous
Punjabi poetess Amrita Pritam and the renowned Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi , at Nehru Memorial Hall.
The hall was packed fully upstairs and
downstairs. The absorbing drama was
enacted superbly with impeccable diction
and sensitive emotive gestures by Deepti
Naval and Shekhar Suman. It was
veritably an emotionally charged torrential cascade of their poetic dialogue
interspersed with a bit of humour and repartees (Nok Jhonk).
Some of Sahir's popular film songs
sung by singers in non filmy tunes ( Hum Dono, Kabhi Kabhi, Pyasa etc) and
their images were projected on the
screen in the background.
The mesmerized audience was gripped in pindrop silence except for some
applause now and then at the soul touching
recitation of some of their Shairis in Urdu and Punjabi. Very eloquently
scripted by Summana Ahmed and Saif Hyder Hasan. It was also designed and
directed by the latter, the deftly
woven drama unfolds through the poets'
dialogues and recitation of their poems,
the story of their unique life and love story .
All in all an ethereal experience .
